The Blagger's Blog 2nd March 2012

A weekly roundup of talking points, sans effort

Worth the paper it’s printed on?

Last week’s light news success stories included…
…Sacha Baron Cohen’s appearance at the Oscars, in character as a dictator, and the subsequent controversy, which made 27 headlines, whereas Occupy London’s potential eviction notice only grabbed 10.

Weekly high

Paddy Power’s latest advert has already been banned, four days after it was first seen. The age old saying that no publicity is the only bad publicity seems to be the company mantra, and in this instance the finished effort could well do the trick.

Weekly low

Barely a month goes by when there isn’t the closure of  significant press title, though the award winning, 15-year-old, once-Guardian affiliated Leeds Guide- seen by many as representative of the city’s economic prosperity- will be missed by more than most.

Battle of the tweets: Manchester vs London vs Cape Town

Top Manchester #tags (seven days to 1/3/2012)

#mufc #mcfc

#lfc #thingspeoplehavetostopdoing

#manchester #towie

#leapyear #oscars

#myweakness #takemeout

Perhaps coming up with stupid Twitter games is one of #thingspeoplehavetostopdoing, or not. The usual suspects (Manchesters United and City) of course make an appearance, as does the extra day we are afforded every four years, and the Oscars.
Top London #tags (seven days to 1/3/2012)

#oscars #lfc

#arsenal #thingspeoplehavetostopdoing

#afc #leapyear

#towie #myweakness

#wisewordstoliveby #inthisgeneration

At the time of writing vast swathes of Londoners were Tweeting ‘#inthisgeneration the word LOYALTY is dead’. What that says about the capital we don’t know, but one thing does remain clear; Arsenal fans are the city’s most active Tweeters.

Top Cape Town, South Africa #tags (seven days to 1/3/2012)

#designindaba #oscars

#malema #superrugby

#capetown #lfc

#leapyear #wdc2014

#ynwa #arsenal

In South Africa’s most beautiful city the annual Design Indaba has been taking place, with conferences, exhibitions and more on design, with a show from Massive Attack to boot, whilst the country’s government just expelled their youth leader, Julius #Malema

That was The Blagger’s Blog, a selection of statements, statistics and noteworthy newsies from across the media and social world, amalgamated, allowing the time-starved professional to start a conversation from thin air.
If there is a success story, blunder, or tweeting town you’d like to see included email [email protected]or tweet using #blaggersblog. Happy Friday!
