The Blagger's Blog 14th October 2011

A weekly roundup of talking points, sans effort

Worth the paper it’s printed on?

Last week’s PR success stories included…
… the end of the Great British Bakeoff, which grabbed 38 articles, while Islamist militants detonated a suicide bomb in Somalia, killing over 100, and only 17 articles responded…
… Jessie J winning the MOBOs, four times, and taking up 34 stories in the process, while the Leveson inquiry into the News International scandal began its seminars, and just 28 pieces made it to print…
…. and finally, Paul McCartney’s marriage to Nancy Shevell, an event that appeared in no less than 28 articles, whereas the general strike declared by Greek public sector workers only made it into 20.

Weekly high

Here at Smoking Gun we love a good yarn, and pride ourselves on mixing captivating narratives with strategic campaign work. It’s no surprise this PlayStation advert from the US caught our eye then, as it uses several stories to tell one tale- that of the potential customer the brand is targeting. Good work.

Weekly low

Research In Motion left BlackBerry users without that ‘legendary’ email service due to a server issue. Then a bad situation became worse, as the company failed to respond adequately via social media, with #DearBlackBerry quickly trending thanks to angry customers, providing another classic example whereby a huge brand has damaged its reputation by not following our simple guide on How to… avoid a brand crisis.

It has been another week of TV talk and random banter. But there have also been far more upsetting subjects on the agenda amongst Manchester’s tweeting community, not least through the wealth of tributes that came pouring in for 11-year old Harry Moseley via #RIPHarry after ‘Britain’s Kindest Kid’, responsible for raising £500,000 for cancer charities by selling handmade bracelets, died from the brain tumour he had been battling.

All quiet on the capital front, with not so much as a faint football chant to be heard for probably the first time since mid-August. There have, however, been plenty of potentially heated, though more than likely slightly sarcastic debates over such hot topics as what two things should not be mixed, what people shouldn’t do, and what the top 10 lies are.

The world’s most famous oil-rich city is understandably proud of the region’s shimmering glass and steel landscape, what with Dubai and United Arab Emirates appearing high on the # agenda. Aside from that one British export that seems to be going down well in this particular corner of the Middle East seems to be the those aforementioned trends based on what shouldn’t be done, and what shouldn’t be mixed. Oh, and the GITEX international ICT conference closes today.
