The Blagger's Blog 14th July 2011

A weekly roundup of talking points, sans effort

Worth the paper it’s printed on?
Last week there were…
…36 articles published on The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visiting Hollywood, yet, sadly, the same amount were written on David Cameron’s announcement that 500 troops would be pulled out of Afghanistan by summer 2012…
…13 articles on Princess Charlene and Prince Albert of Monaco’s eternal love, yet just 3 pieces reported new allegations that the death of Syed Saleem Shahzad, a journalist kidnapped by the Taliban, was sanctioned by Pakistani authorities …
…and 24 articles on the arrival of the Beckham’s first daughter were printed, while no more than 16 stories made the press on Santander relocating call centres from India to Glasgow, Leicester and Liverpool.

Weekly high:
Orange shows the world how to take a big social media idea and cut through the background noise by offering Facebookers the chance to ‘pimp their profile’ with a personal image created by London-based illustrator Chris Martin.
Weekly low:
The National Union of Journalists accuses BBC management of avoiding talks to avert proposed strike action, rounding off another dark week of media affairs.
Battle of the Tweets: Manchester vs London vs Toronto

It will be news to none that News of the World is again high on the agenda when it comes to Tweets. On top of that celebrations continue after Man United’s record 19th English championship title, and The Apprentice is getting really good now.

Naturally, London being the centre of all things on printed media the News International scandal takes precedent with no less than three of the top ten tags. There are also a lot of people adding ‘in my pants’ to film titles for a joke.

There’s plenty of civic pride about in Canada’s most famous city. Or not, as #tocouncil has as many positive as negative conversations surrounding it (austerity measures being just one issue, along with the local #bike lanes).
