The Blagger's Blog 14th December 2012

A weekly roundup of talking points, sans effort

Thought for the week

“We’ve learnt quite a few lessons over the past 48 hours, to say the least.” A Lidl spokesperson said after the supermarket expected to hand out 1,000 Christmas meals to the homeless in Belgium, but  in the end agreed to distribute 10,000 after the Twitter campaign went viral.

Worth the paper it’s printed on

Light news success stories in the papers this week included…
…Harry Styles of One Direction and Taylor Swift apparently dating, with 33 articles reporting on the young love therein, in contrast Childline’s reported surge in self harm calls only made it into 5…
…Helen Flanagan, of I’m A Celebrity, making an appearance at the Military Awards, as per 5 stories, whereas Ash disease outbreaks doubled in one month, sparking criticism of the Government’s response policy and only made it into 2…
…X Factor winner James Arthur claiming to be ‘a great lover’, as featured in 2 headlines, the same amount that reported on NASA’s plans for another Mars rover by 2012.

Weekly high

On Tuesday morning, at roughly 8.30AM, Londoners working close to the river could well have been lucky enough to see this 50-foot rubber duck bobbing its way down the Thames, resulting in worldwide media coverage for JackpotJoy.com, a company that apparently believes people in Britain’s capital aren’t laughing enough.

Weekly low

It’s almost as if they don’t want us to talk about anything else. This time round Google has hit global headlines after Bloomberg broke the news everyone’s favourite friendly search giant escaped from $2billion in international taxes through a legal loophole involving Bermuda. We promise the low will be about something completely different next week. Hopefully.

Things that might happen next week…

On Friday, December 21st, there will be an update on developments in the UK GDP and labour market, potentially making for a pretty unpleasant Christmas present, the next day, Saturday 22nd, Scotland’s Scotrail guarantee misery with the first of two planned festive strikes, and Britain may face another bout of flooding, with warnings in place for the next week across the country.

If there is a success story, blunder, or news event you’d like to see included email helloATsmokinggun.co.uk or tweet using #blaggersblog. Happy Friday!
