The Blagger's Blog 10th February 2012

A weekly roundup of talking points, sans effort

Worth the paper it’s printed on?

Last week’s light news success stories included…
… A Dangerous Method premiering, the Freudian film from David Cronenberg starring Keira Knightly, with 30 stories reporting on the event, whereas a report into undercover policing, including the case of Mark Kennedy and the environmental protestors, only appeared in 13.

Weekly high

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is, without question, one of the most iconic films of the 1980s. Equally vital to Matthew Broderick’s young career when compared with War Games it focuses on young Ferris, who decides to bunk school and hit downtown Chicago with his friends. It obviously made quite an impression on the Honda bosses too, hence this viral homage.

Weekly low

This week’s fail appeared on Movie Reviews, and concerns Sleeping Beauty. The controversial film is about a young girl who is willingly drugged then used by men in whatever way they choose, so a PR campaign asking UK students to enter a two-minute video of themselves as ‘a real life sleeping beauty’ for a chance of winning £1000 is worrying, not just inappropriate.

Battle of the tweets: Manchester vs London vs the UK

The BBC will be breathing a sigh of relief as investing in American sport seems to have paid off, what with the superbowl ranking in Manchester’s top Twitter trends, no doubt in part thanks to those cheerleaders. On top of the top two Premiership teams are also present and correct, along with The Only Way Is Essex (surprise surprise).

As in Manchester football of a non-soccer type has gone down well with Londoners. Elsewhere #uksnow is indicative of how much worse the south got things than the North West, with Heathrow seeing half of its flights cancelled in one day, confusingly to ‘reduce disruptions’.

The superbowl and Manchester United (#mufc) make it a hat trick by appearing in the top trends of all three locations. The same goes for #igetthatalot, which is open to interpretation, while that programme about Essex apparently has nearly the whole country gripped.
