The Ingenious Round Up – 9th October 2013

With the nights drawing in and the temperature rapidly dropping, there’s probably never been a more apt time to inject some ingenuity back into your brains. Shake of the lethargy and perk up your grey matter with these shining examples of the word ingenious; who knows, you might even learn a thing or two. Here we have it, the Ingenious Round Up.
Claiming to be ‘possibly the greatest invention since the internet’, NeverWet is a spray that covers objects with a superhydrophobic coating so that oil and water simply cannot touch the surface. Aside from the obvious novelty appeal NeverWet could promise to stop wood from rotting, windscreens from freezing and metal from eroding – and that’s not even getting started on the scientific side of things.

We love our Kickstarter inventions here at Smoking Gun and this one is no exception; the LIFX is a WiFi controlled light bulb that could last up to 25 years. The nifty bulb can turn on to wake you up, turn off when you leave the house and to be back on when you get back all through clever WiFi programming. Simply use the corresponding app to change everything from timings to the colour of light being emitted.

For the short sighted or blind the smartphone experience is dramatically less enjoyable, so Kriyate’s braille enabled smartphone (due to launch amongst the public in 2014) is an almost natural yet nevertheless ingenious step in the progression of mobile devices. The handset’s display is operated by moving, repressible pins so that those who read braille can understand what’s on the screen in front of them.

Going back to our penchant for WiFi enabled gadgets and gizmos, we’re ending this weeks round up with a wireless kettle. The iKettle is controlled remotely from your smartphone or tablet, great for those who want to squeeze in some extra sleep while waiting for the water to boil in the morning. Once boiled the iKettle sends you a notification, checking if the user would like to keep the water warm for a while. When we’re not cooking up some ingenious PR we’re drinking tea and coffee by the gallon, so for us this is a sure fire ingenious invention.
