Facebook colour comments – a social media blunder?

In an effort to make Facebook more colourful, the social media giant’s recent update is sure to turn a few users off.
Over the past few days, Facebook has introduced colour comments in what The Independent reported, “an extremely garish new look???.
Evert Groot, a Facebook user first spotted the change and shared his thoughts on Twitter: “Colour comments really look hideous on Facebook???

With the feature not yet available to all users, those who can access it can choose from block colour comments or a gradient. The colours feel a bit like the Facebook-owned Instagram logo, perhaps in an effort to tie the two platforms together a bit more such as with the recent news regarding Facebook Stories failing and Instagram stepping in to help.

The Next Web, even described the update as hitting ‘Myspace level 100’ and labelled the comments as god-awful but after reaching out to Facebook themselves, this is what they have to say; “We’re always exploring new ways for people to connect and have conversations, so we are testing new features on comments,???.

For me, I can see that Facebook is trying to give users more opportunities to personalise their profiles and comments. But, in this instance, the colour palette feels cheap and devalues the clean, crisp blue and white that we know and love.

We all want personalisation but this time, Facebook got it wrong and needs to go back to the drawing board.
