Thought for the Week

The UK economy is performing strongly thanks to rising business and consumer confidence, better credit conditions at home and improving global economic conditions.” Katja Hall, CBI deputy director-general.

Weekly High

Simultaneously advertising Canadian Marketing Association’s National Convention, and poking fun at the whole idea of marketing products, we fell in love with Marketing: The Musical from the first moment our eyes fell on the hilarious skit. Full marks.

Weekly Low

The woes of Orange customer service have become somewhat legendary in the UK, but nobody expects a young mother to receive a text message that reads: “You are so pathetic you can’t pay your bill and you blame it other people. You are sooo pathetic“. A missed direct debit resulted in Emma Townsend’s bill being significantly higher than expected and was sent the bullying SMS after her boyfriend called to complain about the charges. A member of Orange staff apologised and said the matter would be ‘dealt with’, but so far no further action has been taken. Now, can anyone guess where the firm went wrong here?

Stories to keep an eye on

*British kids are to be taught coding in schools from as young as five, with plans to introduce the new lessons from this October.
*The latest embarrassment for Liberal Democrats across Britain surfaced this week with calls for Lord Rennard after it emerged he ‘actively encroached on the personal space of four activists’. Which means he sleazed on some girls and acted completely inappropriately, if you read between the lines.

*Pound for pound companies are now spending an average of 20% more on TV advertising, partly as a result of a significant slump in commercial viewing figures, meaning firms are now paying more to reach a smaller audience.
