A weekly roundup of media news and talking points, sans effort

Quote of the week

“Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.” Franklin D. Roosevelt’s words of wisdom, which seem appropriate given today is the International Day of Happiness.

 Weekly High

We all know about the Jeremy Clarkson BBC punch up. We were also rather bored of the resulting hype and speculation, until Snickers decided to send 48 chocolate bars to the potentially sacked Top Gear host, along with the brand message ‘You’re Not You When You’re Hungry’- a reference to how angry we all get when the stomach needs filling. Genius.

Weekly Low

Food may be heading further down the natural, organic, know where it came from route, but Burger King should have considered its options more thoroughly here. Chicken Fries (strips of poultry, shaped like chips) are coming back to the fast food giant’s menu, and to celebrate the take away chain decided to let a real life chicken make the decision as to whether his pals should be tonight’s dinner.

Stories to keep an eye on

The BBC Trust has instructed Radio 2 to do more for black, Asian and other minority ethnic listeners, whilst announcing cuts to Radio 1 and Radio 3 drama.

The EU has passed new data protection laws which could have implications for marketing departments.

Twitter is planing on selling user tweets, which contain vital marketing information if you know how to analyse them, in a bid to bolster its brand offering.

Just in case you missed it

This week we’ve been looking at Meerkat, a new(ish) social media platform built around the idea of live streaming video. Take a look at what we discovered here.
